T-MSIS Data & Research Core: A Resource To Conduct Advanced Empirical Research Using Medicaid Data For All States In The U.S.
In 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provided a groundbreaking opportunity to researchers by making available the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS) Analytic Files (TAF). These data include comprehensive administrative claims data from Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP) for all 50 states. The research potential of T-MSIS data is immense, yet significant barriers to entry have resulted in only a small number of elite research institutions currently able to work with these data.
The Endowed Chair is positioning UAB as an ‘early mover’ and leader in research with T-MSIS data. With strong support from the Department of Health Policy and Organization (UAB), the T-MSIS Data & Research Core Team has acquired T-MSIS data from 2016-2021 and has built the expertise required to conduct advanced empirical analyses with these data.
The T-MSIS Data & Research Core currently has two Data Use Agreements (DUAs) with CMS:
- DUA #1, PI: Sen, Diabetes & Obesity Research
- DUA #2, PI: Zhang, Opioids & Substance Use Research
The T-MSIS Data & Research Core aims to foster collaborations and help investigators conduct cutting-edge research by leveraging the potential of T-MSIS data.
