Research in our lab:
The Pollard Lab develops and applies experimental and computational methods to quantify electrical characteristics of heart tissue. We are specifically interested in using systems of very small and closely spaced electrodes on different types of tissue preparations as a way to resolve cardiac action potentials, characteristics of propagation, and passive electrical properties documenting how small groups of cells couple to one another electrically.
What methods/tools do we use:
• A range of tissue preparations including different animal models and tissue-engineered heart patches.
• Assembly of electrode arrays using silver wires for unique electrophysiological recordings of tissue impedance.
• Software development (in MATLAB) for data processing of electrophysiological recordings in action potential development and propagation.
• Hardware development including printed circuit board prototyping and design.
About you:
You should enjoy working on challenging experimental techniques and/or programming tasks. You will be working with an interdisciplinary team of scientists from engineering and cardiology. You should have the ability to work in a team, have good management and communication skills and be highly motivated and committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research.
UAB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and family-friendly environment in which all faculty and staff can excel and achieve work/life balance irrespective of race, national origin, age, genetic or family medical history, gender, faith, gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation. UAB also encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans.
