SEMESTER TIMELINES
GENERAL MPH INTERNSHIP TIMELINE
Prior to the start of the semester in which you plan to complete your internship | Sign Up for the Professional Passport Interprofessional Activity and Complete the Remaining Professional Passport Activities Students must 1) Complete the Interprofessional (IP) Practice Modules and components, 2) Submit two (2) Enrichment Activities, and 3) review all other content (Modules 1 – 8). Additionally, students must complete an Interprofessional Activity (see very important note below). The completion of Interprofessional Activity requires registration and participation in extracurricular events that are scheduled at the start of the semester. You will need to sign up for the IP Activity at the start of the semester before you plan to complete your internship (ex. if you plan to complete your internship in Fall, you must sign up by the start of the Summer Term). Do not wait until the last minute to sign up for the IP Activities as these activities fill up by the early part of the semester. See the MPH Professional Passport in Canvas for more details. If you do not see the Professional Passport in your Canvas courses, please contact Tessa Graham (tessaegr@uab.edu). Exceptions to complete the IP activity concurrently with the internship may be granted on a case-by-case basis, but this exception must be granted before the student starts their MPH internship. If granted this exception, the student will be required to complete the IP Activity by the end of the semester in which they complete their internship. An “incomplete” for their internship will be issued until all Professional Passport Requirements are fulfilled. |
The semester before you plan to complete your internship | Meet with your Internship Coordinator. Students should contact their internship coordinator to schedule a meeting to discuss the internship requirements and registration process. |
~2-3 months prior to the start of the internship | Determine who will serve as your preceptor (site supervisor) at your site. Once you have entered your preceptor’s information into APEx, the OPHP will receive a notification to verify and request approval for your preceptor to be added to the system. Depending on if your preceptor already has an account, is internal to UAB, has a UABMC account, or is external to UAB, the time for approval could take as little as a few minutes to a couple of days; there are additional steps UABMC employees and external preceptor will need to take before they are approved and can access APEx. Preceptor registration must be completed before the student can submit the Internship Proposal (IP) form for approval. |
ASAP after securing your internship position. | Complete the Internship Proposal form and Background Check. This form must be approved and approved by your internship preceptor and internship instructor BEFORE you can register for the course and start your internship. If you complete the internship proposal form before we are able to verify your preceptor, you will not be able to submit the form. Once your preceptor has been approved, you will receive an email. At that time, you can log back into APEx and submit your proposal. Your internship instructor and preceptor will automatically receive an email requesting they approve the IP form once submitted. If you do not see your internship instructor listed in the APEx portal, please contact ophp@uab.edu. Students who enrolled Fall 2020 and after must complete the Interprofessional Modules of the Professional Passport as well as a background check before registering for the internship (see instructions for completing the backgound check). |
Prior to the first day of class | Hold should be lifted from the internship course by your program coordinator (this will not be available until signatures for your IP form are on file from your Internship Instructor and Preceptor). |
Prior to the last day for open registration | Register for the appropriate internship course for 3 credit hours. |
First day of classes for the semester | You cannot start your internship prior to this date and you must be registered for the 3-credit internship course under your internship advisor before starting |

Verify that your internship instructor has completed the internship midpoint confirmation. |
